Fall Iyengar Yoga Course

There is just one week left of our summer Iyengar courses at both Yoga on 7th and Ocean and Crow before I head off for some family vacation time. If I haven’t seen you in a while, feel free to drop-in this week and practice. I’ll be reducing my teaching in the fall, and will only be offering one morning class per week at Ocean and Crow Yoga on Friday mornings from 10-11:30am. It’s a lovely group of dedicated students who attend this class, and suitable for all levels of yoga students. I’ll be taking a few months off after that, and then hope to return to a fuller teaching schedule sometime in the spring of 2019.

Aligning Body, Mind and Breath (8 classes, Sept-Oct 2018)

Do you want to start your day off right? Join Meghan Goodman, certified Iyengar yoga instructor, for an alignment based practice that will help you feel more centered and energized for your day. The teaching will focus on building stable and healthy foundations. We will work on improving concentration and developing inner awareness so that the postures become a form of ‘meditation in action’, integrating the body, mind and breath. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and we will discover together how the use of yoga props can assist us to find our bodies optimal flow of energy, to offer support when needed, and to move deeper in the postures without creating stress or tension. The specific content of the course will be tailored for the students enrolled; ie. where they are at in their practice, and what their goals and yoga curiosities are.

Summer Sessions

Thank you for joining me for a great spring yoga session, we’ve got just a week or so left in our current session, so make sure you come use your make-up classes before they expire. I’m pleased to be offering two classes per week for the majority of the summer. I’m taking the last two weeks of August off to visit family back East. Feel free to join me for a drop-in, or register for a session, there is still space left in both of my courses. All of the information is below.

If you’ve been interested in setting up a home practice, the summer is a perfect time to do it. Once you’ve established your goals and routine, you can take your practice with you travelling, or outside to experience  yoga in nature. If you want some guidance on that, I’m available for private yoga sessions, just email me to set it up. Looking forward to a wonderful summer, and I hope that our paths will cross on the mat or somewhere beautiful outdoors.

Join Iyengar Yoga teacher Meghan Goodman for a progressive series of classes on Sunday evenings. From the Ground Up is a weekly course designed to create a strong foundation for students new to yoga while offering opportunities for those with a regular practice to deepen their understanding of the poses and how they work best in our own bodies.

Week 1: Feet, Ankles, and Knees: Learn how correct actions and alignment in the lower part of the body can help improve balance, stability, and joint health.

Week 2: Legs and Hips: Discover how the standing poses can build energy, stamina, and confidence while better understanding how to open and strengthen the legs. Experience the differences between internal and external rotation of the hips. Learn conditioning exercises for stability, and safe stretches that open the hip without disrupting the knees.

Week 3: Abdomen and Lower Back: Focus on strengthening the abdomen to keep your lower back healthy in yoga practice and in life.

Week 4: Upper Back and Shoulders: Experience how the use of the arms and legs can support the opening of the chest. Find strength and space in the shoulders to prepare the body for inversions.

Week 5: Mobility through movement: This class will focus on slow-paced sun salutations and the linking of postures with the breath for a warming and playful practice.

Week 6: Reverse the flow: Learn safe inversion practices for your own level of experience. Through preparations and the use of props, students will learn how to build strong foundations and find optimal alignment in order to receive the many benefits of turning upside down.

Week 7: Restoration and breathing: The final week of this session will offer a chance to work with the subtle body through gentle postures and exploration of pranayama, the art and science of the breath.

Fall into Winter

IMG_1326

It seems like yesterday (literally) when I was walking through trout lake park enjoying the beautiful fall colours. Over night, in the blink of an eye, it feels like winter is here. As someone who pretty much feels cold from now until July, I appreciate the warm and cozy studios I get to practice and teach in. I feel very grateful to be able to participate and collaborate with a community of people who join together to maintain their health and well being through yoga.

If you’d like to join me, I’ve got some new classes starting up soon. Send me a note if you have any questions: meghangoodman@hotmail.com

For the dance fans out there, I’ll be performing in Dance in Vancouver, a double bill featuring Aeriosa Second Nature (excerpt) and Co.ERASGA Tracing Malong.

Sun, Air, Sand and Ocean: Upcoming Yoga Courses and Workshops

Greetings, I hope you’ve all enjoyed this lovely transition into fall. I was fortunate enough to have a quick visit to Tofino to dance in the trees on the edge of the Pacific Rim Nation Park Reserve at Long Beach this September with Aeriosa. What a joy to take in the beauty and fresh air of that stunning place.

I’ve also recently completed my Intermediate Junior 1 teaching certification in Iyengar Yoga. I wanted to say a big thank you to my family, peers, and teachers who supported me in this work. The process of going through an assessment like this called to my mind tapas. Tapas is the third of the niyamas (personal observances) from Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras.  It has been translated into English as heat, spiritual austerities, fiery discipline and internal fire.

BKS Iyengar wrote that, “A worthy aim makes life illumined, pure and divine. Without such an aim, action and prayer have no value. Life without tapas is like a heart without love.

My aim was simply to learn more, to develop in my own practice, and to be able to share this information through my teaching. I certainly feel that much was learned through this process and I look forward to continuing to sharing it with my students.
Please join me for the next set of classes this fall. I’ll be continuing to teach at Yoga on 7th and Ocean and Crow. I’ve added two special Sunday night workshops at Ocean and Crow November 5th and December 3rd. See below for details.

Upcoming Iyengar Yoga Workshops at Ocean and Crow

Happy, Healthy Hips and Knees

Sunday, November 5th, 7:00-9:00pm

Join me for an informative 2 hour workshop in which we learn to both strengthen and open the hips. Through a series of standing poses we will warm up the hip muscles and learn to identify which ones assist us in balances and help us find stability in our pelvis. Next we will explore the seated work of both internal and external rotation. Learn how to find more ease in your hips without straining the knees or ankles, bringing circulation to this large group of muscles, and creating a positive response throughout the whole body. This workshop is appropriate for students of all levels, including those working with injuries and pregnant students who maintain a regular practice.

Finally, if you feels so inclined…and if my teaching and/or these two studios have had a positive impact on your life, then I’d like to ask you for a favor.

Both Ocean and Crow and Yoga on 7th are independently run with very small budgets for advertising. And because we don’t have reception areas, it’s hard for people to walk in the door and have a look around. So we continue to be “discovered” by people who have lived in the neighbourhood and walked past the studio for years.

Can I ask for your help in creating some good word of mouth for us on the Internet? It doesn’t take much time, and every bit helps. I know that when I see positive reviews I feel more comfortable about trying out a new place.

Here are three easy ways you can give the studio a helping hand.

  1. You can like our page on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/Yogaon7th/ or  https://www.facebook.com/oceanandcrowyoga/

Once you’re there, look on the left hand side of the page and you’ll see a list with “Reviews” midway down. Click on that and it will open a screen with an invitation to “Tell people what you think” under some greyed out stars. That’s your spot to rate us and leave a review.

2. To leave a review on Google, search for Yoga on 7th or Ocean and Crow.

Google’s information on the studio will show up on the right hand side of the page. Scroll down and you’ll find a button to click to write a review. You can write something, add a photo if you like, or just give us a star rating, one to five.

3. To leave a review on Yelp, go to: https://www.yelp.ca/biz/yoga-on-7th-vancouver or  https://www.yelp.ca/biz/ocean-and-crow-yoga-space-vancouver

Your chance to leave a review is at the top of the page.

Thank you for helping us out.

Thank you also to Siobhan Sloane-Seale, Alisoun Payne and Aileen Warbrook for joining me in the above photo taken by Suzanne Rushton.

Summer Yoga Sessions

I wanted to thank those of you who came to check out “Ancestralizing the Present: Protocols and Practices in Northwest Coast First Nations Dance” at the Dance Centre on June 10th.  It was a huge honour to perform in this event. These companies will be sharing more collaborative work in Stanley Park July 15th.

I also wanted to thank those who joined Siobhan Sloane-Seale and I for the “Spring into Summer” workshop June 11th at Yoga on 7th.

It was a full weekend of culture, music and movement.

The next session of summer yoga courses are coming up and I’d like to invite you to a complimentary “Yoga on Us” class I’ll be teaching soon at Ocean and Crow. It’s a sample of the work we do in the “From the Ground Up” course which starts up July 9th.

The complimentary class is Wednesday June 21st from 6-7:15pm, please invite your friends and do register in advance as space is limited:  http://oceanandcrow.ca/node/1947

The next session at Yoga on 7th begins Tuesday June 20th-July 25th. It is $96 for the 6-weeks and $20 to drop in.

If you are interested in this session you can register directly with me either through an e-transfer sent to meghangoodman@hotmail.com or in person at the studio with cash or cheque.
