First off, I’ve been nominated to be part of an ongoing Calotype photographic portfolio project titled “Vancouver Creatives”. A Calotype is a photographic process that uses eco-friendly photochemistry with a massive 1920s 8×10 camera system purposed to deliver authentic and vibrant historical portraits. I am a candidate in the Healthy Living/Yoga category and could be one of the 20 Vancouverites to represent Vancouver talent in this community portfolio:
The voting system is online and will be open until January 31. Here is a link to my nomination page. If you’d like to vote, click the heart symbol by my name.
And… Aeriosa is off to work on a residency at The Banff Arts Centre and then to Revelstoke…winter, here I come. We are offering Aeriosa workshops, discussions and a performance.
During Spirit Fest, the Revelstoke Performing Arts Centre will play host to Aeriosa Dance Society. This aerial dance company has a reputation for creating unexpected experiences of dance. While in Revelstoke, the group will develop an original aerial dance performance based on the space and contours of our performing arts centre. By dancing in non-traditional environments such as hallways and on skyscrapers while incorporating unusual performance scenarios, audiences are literally swept up in the beauty of acrobatic dance.
A week before the performance, you will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes and explore the ‘making of’ a site-specific dance show during their talk-back session. In addition, they will offer workshops and other educational activities in dance to the community.
Tickets $15 for both events available from the Chamber of Commerce and ArtFirst! in downtown Revelstoke and online. Workshops details TBA.
I’m feeling very grateful this year for the opportunities I have had to explore dance in so many unique settings. From working with the Vancouver Opera on The Magic Flute and Tea: A Mirror of Soul to dangling from the roof of the Shadbolt and Woodwards Atrium with Aeriosa.
This year I collaborated with fellow dance artist Julia Carr and musician extraordinaire CR Avery in an intimate performance for the In the House Festival, and had my first experience dancing in the beautiful treetop canopy in Tofino’s botanical garden.
The Body Narratives Collective’s produced Dark Room, our first full length production working with a team of nearly 20 artists. Here is a link to a recently published article on the performance.
And I feel very fortunate to have participated in the epic adventure of preparing for and dancing 600 feet up on the Chief in Squamish this past August with Aeriosa.
Here is a sample of some of the footage captured on the Chief:
Over the next few weeks I am offering some opportunities to practice yoga for free. I know this time of year can be stressful, and I wanted to offer something to my students and friends to support them.
This first one is for those who have some experience with yoga. I will be opening up cozy East Side Yoga (1707 Grant St, just off of Commercial) from 12-2pm on boxing day, December 26th. This is a time for students to come in and do their own independent practice. I will be there if you have some questions about your practice, but mostly l’d just like to offer space for you to do your own thing. This will not be a led class. If you are coming, please arrive a few minutes before noon, so we can all settle in together before beginning.
In the new year, I will be offering 4 “free to the public” Iyengar classes at The Yoga Space, a beautiful studio just off of Fraser and 27th. The studio is customized for Iyengar Yoga; yoga ropes and an expansive collection of props enable learning for those new to yoga and new to Iyengar yoga.
These classes are being generously supported by The Yoga Space, and held on:
Tuesday January 7th: 12-1:30pm Wednesday January 8th: 5:30-7:30pm Friday January 10th: 10-11:30am Saturday January 11th: 1-3pm
Please arrive a few minutes early to fill out the waiver and settle in.
Regular classes will resume in the new year:
I will be out of town Jan 23-Feb 7, so there will be subs in during those dates

The next session runs January 6th to March 2nd.
2645 East Hastings Street

This is a pre-register classes with some room for drop-ins, it is $14 to drop in your first time.
I’ll be performing with Aeriosa in the SFU Woodwards Atrium.
If you haven’t seen what we’ve been working on with bungee-lines, come check it out.
AERIOSA REFUGIA is an impressionable new site work that establishes zones of creative refuge in public. Bungee-lines provide elastic tension as the dancers explore horizontal and vertical airspace finding unexpected ways to inhabit common ground. This second installment of REFUGIA takes place in the Woodwards Atrium, an indoor plaza that houses two large-scale works of public art: a massive photo mural of the 1971 Gastown Riots by Vancouver photographer Stan Douglas, and a symbolic umbilical staircase by architect Gregory Henriquez.

The Body Narratives Collective (co-directed by Julia Carr and myself) will be premiering Dark Room: the realm of symbols, science and memories December 4th and 5that the Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre. Dark Room, is a unique theatrical experience which weaves together music, dance, science, technology and photography. We are really excited to share this work.
Dancing on the Stawamus Chief in Squamish was a huge highlight for the summer. Aeriosa and an amazing team of riggers, photographers and even a computerized flying drone made it’s way 600 feet up to capture some footage of us dancing on the famous Grand Wall.
After a few days of rest, Aeriosa headed over to Vancouver Island to create a performance for the opening ceremony of the IFSC World Youth Championships, held at Boulders Climbing Gym in Saanich. You can view the 6 minute performance, 46 minutes into this clip:
Next, we were off to Tofino. Ocean, beach, and forest at its very best.
Aeriosa spent 9 days rehearsing in preparation for a performance both on the ground and in the trees at the Botanical Garden for their annual Lantern Festival. It was wonderful to participate in this magical event, and was our first time dancing in the trees and collaborating with the lovely and talented Kim Tuson. Needless to say, I loved being up in the canopy, getting sprinkled in moss, breathing in the freshest air, and observing the creatures that live in the unique aerial habitat.
It has been a very exciting summer, and now that I’m home, I wanted to share my teaching schedule for the fall. I’ve got some new classes and workshops coming up, and am still available for private sessions if you prefer to work one-on-one.

Having just wrapped up a two week residency at SFU Woodwards for research on Dark Room with the Body Narratives Collective, I am excited to announce that I’ll be performing next on Sunday June 9th at 7pm at the In the House Festival, in a new collaboration between The Body Narratives Collective and CR Avery.
Having danced in the very first festival 10 years ago, I was invited back to perform in a showcase called “The Originals” along side some very talented artists who were also featured in that first year (namely, Naomi Steinberg, CR Avery, and Push3). The In the House Festival is an amazing East Vancouver event, featuring music, dance, magic, comedy, burlesque and circus. Over 3 days, 13 houses open up their doors and yards to host these unique and intimate performances.
I have just arrived home from the Red Rocks where I did my first multi-pitch climbs last week.
Big blue skies, cactus gardens and beautiful sandstone formations, truly nature’s playground. It was exhilarating to be working on my climbing skills in such a beautiful setting with a great group of friends and colleagues.
I’ve also begun dance rehearsals for Vancouver Opera’s next production Tea: A Mirror of Soul.
“An extraordinary fusion of Western opera and Eastern myth from the academy-award winning composer of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon… Combining sounds of water, paper, ceramic and stone with a traditional western orchestra, Tan Dun’s haunting score is trance-like and beautiful.”
Performances run May 4, 7, 9 and 11 at 7: 30pm. For more info and tickets visit:

Hello friends, I have two exciting announcements to share:
First, I will be performing with the Vancouver Opera in a west coast version of The Magic Flute from March 9-17th. I feel incredibly honored to be a part of this production.
“Set on the rocky shores and in the ancient rainforests of the Pacific Coast, VO’s highly praised 2007 production, with new design elements, artfully blends Mozart’s beguiling music with indigenous mythology and visually stunning design. The eternal story of humankind’s search for spiritual harmony will move you; the human characters, spirit-animals and supernatural creatures will delight you. Original production conceived with the guidance of First Peoples’ Cultural Council and an advisory group of First Nations artists.”
