New Year: New Class at the Yoga Space

Thank you to all who came to the Pranayama workshop at East Side Yoga on Nov 10th. We focused on a gentle practice of pranayama as taught in the Iyengar yoga tradition, working to improve concentration, reduces stress, and flood the body with vital energy. I hope that those of you who attended will take the practice home with you and integrate it into your lives.

I’m excited to announce that I will be teaching a new course at the beautiful Yoga Space studio, where I have been a student and in teacher training for the past few years. The Yoga Space is moving to a new location in April, so this will be a wonderful last opportunity to study in a space that has hosted over a decade of rich yoga practice. The Yoga Space is an airy, spacious, and well-equipped studio near the south side of the Cambie Street Bridge close to downtown Vancouver.

If you have never been to an Iyengar studio before you might find that having access to props like a rope wall, yoga chairs, inversion slings, etc…will bring a new level of understanding to your practice. If you or anyone you know might like to take this course with me please pass along this info. We begin January 9th, once a week on Wednesday’s from 2-3:30pm. The cost is $215 for 14 weeks of classes (1.5 hours long).

In other news, I will be traveling in Bali from Nov 24th-Dec 9th, so there will be excellent subs coming in to teach my regular classes….

Upcoming Toronto Show

Castlepoint Realty Partners is taking the traditional concept of a construction worker “topping out” party to a whole new level (no pun intended) by inviting Aeriosa to present a free public performance on the sheer glass and bare concrete skeleton of their amazing building, the L Tower, a 58 story Toronto building designed by well known architect Daniel Liebskind. This unique show will link Aeriosa’s surreal and lofty dance with cellist Liza MeClellan performing selections from Bach’s Suite for Solo Cello down at street level. The show takes place October 10th 2012 at 7 pm at the corner of Yonge Street and Front Street in downtown Toronto. Please help us spread the word about this highest ever Aeriosa dance performance to your friends, colleagues and loved ones living in the Toronto area. Check out this photo of Julia Taffe, performing a dance rope test from the 37th floor while wearing hard hat and boots as befits an active construction site.

Also, have you heard about “A Journey of Dance in Flight”?

Rockethub 2

Body Narratives Collective, Julia Carr and I (seen above),  have been inspired by a youtube video of a skydiving dance in a wind tunnel. Check out this video, its amazing!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLm_YzY3kLU&feature=player_embedded

We sourced a local training facility Fly Zone and tried their introductory package. We are hooked! Our goal is to learn the basics of dancing with fluidity in a wind tunnel as a first step towards creating an ambitious wind tunnel dance. We are asking for $3,000 to cover the costs of semi-private training sessions with an experienced instructor and 90-minutes each of wind tunnel time. (So far we are at $515 and have 45 days to go)

The Rocket Hub campaign will run until mid-November. If you know of anyone that would be interested in following our progress, or contributing as a fueler, please forward this link:

Hope to see you from the air soon!

Two shows in one week!

Come check out these exciting shows this week:

Aeriosa Thursday September 27 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre

The show is at noon, runs for about one hour including an artist talk back.

Single tickets are $12/$10 students, seniors and children from Tickets Tonight: book online or call 604.684.2787 (charges apply to phone bookings only).

Aeriosa’s spectacular aerial dance shows bring together the athleticism of rock climbing and the grace and artistry of dance. Using rope rigging systems, the company creates three-dimensional performances that re-interpret gravity, and delight and inspire audiences. Choreographer Julia Taffe presents a program of theatre-based work and provides revealing insights into a unique dance genre. www.aeriosa.com

There are no limits except the 14 minute performance time – oh and a completed piece in only one week. Sure to capture the imagination, the funny bone and the creative spirit of participants and audience alike, 7 explores the very limits of what possibilities exist when one is pushed to the limit…
