This year BNC was selected by the Vancouver Park Board and the Kensington Community Centre Association as recipients of the 2012 Artists in Communities Program http://vancouver.ca/parks/arts/air.htm. BNC collaborated with Maggie Winston, of Lost and Found Puppet Co, in the creation of Habitat: A Community Performance Project. We organized and facilitated a community engaged site-specific performance using dance and puppetry to animate the unique features of the facility, including a swimming pool! Visit kensingtonart.wordpress.com to see videos and images of the creation process.
With the first snowdrops coming up in the garden, spring is not far off. This is a great time to be practicing yoga to fend off those last winter colds, and prepare the body’s immune system for spring allergies.
I’ve found boosting up on vitamin C, nettle tea, and triphala to be helpful a few weeks before the cherry blossoms open. Triphala is a popular Indian herb combination, it is a mild detox for your colon and digestive system, and can help eliminate the build up makes allergy symptoms worse. Also, using a neti pot to keep the nasal passage clear and avoiding dairy is helpful.
And of course, rest is always helpful. For some tips on using a sandbag both in restorative yoga poses, and more active ones, check out this article I worked on for Halfmoon Yoga. http://www.halfmoon.bz/blog/?p=299

This spring I am offering a workshop for women at East Side Yoga
April 7th, 3-5pm
Special Practice for Women
Come learn how to adjust your yoga practice to be safe and healthy during your menstrual cycle. Together we will experience a complete sequence which you can use for home practice, and learn modifications you can use in a class setting. Knowing which asanas to practice, which to avoid, and how to make adaptations can make all the difference in soothing the physical discomforts and emotional rough edges that occur during your cycle. Restore and re-energize through this quiet, steady work.
At Green Room Yoga the small class size and progressive nature of a pre-registered class allows for a safe and supportive environment for deepening ones practice.
5:45-7:15pm Iyengar Level 1
Iyengar yoga is a systematic method of Hatha Yoga named after B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India, who is one of the foremost yoga masters in the world. The Iyengar method works on the principle of meditation in action. Practitioners concentrate closely on the movements in the yoga postures (asanas), bringing the body into balance by increasing mobility, stability, strength and alignment. At the same time, this intense concentration draws the attention inward, quieting and integrating mind and body. The hallmark of the Iyengar approach is the ability to adapt the poses to the needs and challenges of the individual student, making it appropriate for all ages and levels of fitness.
7:30-9:00pm Hatha Flow
This class in geared towards yoga students with some experience who would like to work on their strength, flexibility, inversions and alignment.
These are pre-register classes with some room for drop-ins.
If you are interested in attending contact alix@greenroomyoga.ca

As Iyengar writes in his interpretation of Patanjali’s sutras, “yoga is the way to harmonize ourselves at every level with the natural order of the universe, from the physical to the most subtle, to reach the total state of health which brings stability, to cultivate the mind with real understanding, and to reach out ultimately to undifferentiated infinity” (Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, p.136).

See the Dancing on the Edge Festival page for more info on that.
A mixed program of dance featuring a special new collaboration betwee Aeriosa and Eagle Song Dancers and an excerpt from Aeriosa’s In Situ, which premiered as part of the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad. Aeriosa resumes their relationship with architecture, live music and vertical dance with the generous support of the Vancouver Public Library.
Traditional canoe singer/dancer Bob Baker and Artistic Director of Aeriosa Julia Taffe, will lead a shared ceremony of Squamish song and dance recalling an ancient Coast Salish ritual of respect for the traditional territories of others. Squamish canoe drum dancing combined with Aeriosa’s signature vertical choreography, will truly celebrate 10,000 years of Squamish culture in the 125th anniversary of modern-day Vancouver.
The wildly popular excerpt from In Situ entitled “Business Woman’s Tango” returns to grace the elegant (and highest!) curved wall of the 22-storey Federal Office Tower at 300 West Georgia.
To get a sense of the perspective we see in the air, check out this clip that Daily Planet did with Aeriosa last spring.
Ustrasana (camel pose) is a great counterpose for those who work at a computer all day, carry children around, spend hours hunched over in the garden, or are just feeling low energy. It stretches the entire front of the body, the ankles, thighs, groins, abdomen, chest, throat and deep hip flexors (psoas). It strengthens the back muscles and improves posture while stimulating the organs in the abdomen and neck.
Come practice with me this month, both restorative and energizing asanas.
Let’s find our balance, our sattva, the luminosity that comes with clarity of mind.

The rapidly evolving relationship between people, technology and online culture inspires taking your experience for mine, an adventurous ensemble work created by Sara Coffin, one of BC’s most exciting emerging choreographic voices. Her new work will investigate how digital traces left for the taking can affect the body and alter the concept of self. Governed by digital devices, flat screens, and conditioned responses; is dialing into the digital network altering one’s ability to attune? Performed by dancersJulia Carr, Amanda Sheather, Meghan Goodman and Jacinte Armstrong, the piece will feature an original score by Coffin’s longtime collaborator Phil Thomson, video and visuals by Andrew Hawryshkewich, and lighting design by Kimberly Plough. taking your experience from mine is presented through The Dance Centre’s third Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award, which is awarded every two years to a young choreographer who shows exceptional promise.
Recently I got a chance to combine two of my loves, hanging upside down on the side of a building, with yoga!
In February I had a wonderful afternoon with photographer Lynne Spencer some of the lovely staff from Halfmoon yoga, demonstrating their sling in use. We got to shoot in the beautiful Yoga Space studio where I study Iyengar yoga with Louie Ettling, and Louie was there working with me on alignment and showing us some of the great asanas you can do using the sling.
Looking forward to a wonderful month of yoga and the first signs of spring.

New Class: Iyengar Level 1 (last class March 31st)
Wednesday’s from 10-11:15am
Developed by B.K.S. Iyengar of Pune, India, Iyengar yoga is known for its attention to correct physical alignment in all postures, leading to the goal of meditation in action. Through the use of props such as straps, blocks, blankets, and bolsters, this method allows students to find better mobility and steadiness in their practice.
Iyengar yoga emphasizes the importance of inverted poses and works with preparations for each student at their appropriate levels. The Level 1 Iyengar class offered at East Side yoga is a good introduction for students new to yoga, new to Iyengar yoga, and those wanting to deepen their understanding of the poses, gain strength, agility and improved focus.
12:15-1:30pm Foundation Flow….send your mom’s, your boyfriends, and anyone else curious but new. Come for the yoga…enjoy the sauna, showers, tea lounge and other great facilities.
Presented by New Works as part of Granville Island’s Winterruption Festival 2011
Road safety workers channel Elvis Presley channeling Italian folk ballads in his glory days! If it sounds confusing don’t worry – once you add Aeriosa’s exuberant vertical moves into the mix – somehow it all makes sense. 50 years ago these pop songs convinced Barry White to pursue a career in music. Performed five times daily by Kira Schaffer and Meghan Goodman on the pillars under the Granville Street Bridge.
COLD HANDS WARM HEART TOO
